What's the Trail all about?

The Tasmanian Trail is the only long distance (480km) multi-use trail in Tasmania. The experience is recreational, cultural and nature based.

It often passes through or close to small towns, allowing travellers to visit local attractions while using as little or as much as they like and to take advantage of local accommodation, hospitality and specialist services.

It offers a variety of experiences for all - from the most experienced long-distance traveller seaking a challenge to those interested in a shorter, more relaxed excursion.

Those taking longer treks should be aware that they are likely to be faced with sudden weather changes, water crossings, varying surface conditions and steep terrain. Drinking water may be difficult to find and access to phone reception will not always be available.

The Tasmanian Trail Association manages the Trail through a volunteer structure with very active support of community groups, local government bodies and regional organisations.

Because the Trail caters for equestrians, it does not traverse National Parks. It relies on support from Forestry Tasmania, other land managers and land owners for its pathway.

Please note that GPX files sourced from other sites or people should not be used to navigate the Trail. Only the file downloaded from this website should be used, which is available to members as part of their membership.

Stage 5 (Distance Travelled - 20.9 km)

The Old Liffey School House building is no longer available for use for overnight stays and camp fires are not permitted.

The School House grounds are available for use provided people are self sufficient. Toilet facilities are also available for use. Trail users are reminded to take rubbish with them (what you take in, you take out).

Repulse Road

There is a sign at the beginning of Repulse Road that the road is closed. Please note that this applies to vehicles only; Repulse Road is open to Tasmanian Trail users.

25/9/24 - Stage 16 - point 13.1 km

Sustainable Timber have notified our Southern Coordinator that they will be burning the area around Swearing Bobs Plain/Boney Road/Hopetoun Road on Saturday, 28th September. Please take caution and directions from crews on the ground.

Smoke may be visible from a wider area. Burn off will occur if conditions are favourable.

Stage 9 and Stage 10 Closures

Stages 9 and 10 are now open following the wildfire that burnt though the area on the Central Plateau. The bush land route has now been remarked.

Leaving Gates How You Find Them

Please note that a farmer, who allows the Trail to cross his property, has informed the Association that his farm gates have recently been left open by Trail users, on four separate occasions. As a consequence, stock has entered paddocks of production crops and the farmer is considering withdrawing his support for the Trail. This would result in the Trail being moved to a busy highway.

Please be careful to leave gates as you find them, ensuring that chains and latches are secure where appropriate.

Kensington Park toilet

Please note that the only toilet available at Kensington Park is in the club rooms.

Dogs on the Trail

The Tasmanian Trail Committee wishes to remind Trail users that dogs are not permitted on sections of the Trail which are private property.

Without the goodwill and cooperation of private landowners, the Tasmanian Trail could not exist. Please treat private property with respect and care.

Foot-and-mouth disease

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease would have severe consequences for Australia's animal health and trade. Tasmania is not immune. Please follow Government guidelines when travelling throughout Tasmania and mainland Australia.
