The Tasmanian Trail
Guidebook gives
mountain bike riders,
equestrians and walkers
all the information
required to travel all,
or part of, the Trail.

The Guidebook is divided into four
sections to correspond with the location
and the nature of the land through which
the Trail traverses. Each section has
been further divided into stages which
average 30km in length. The guide
also includes specific information and
guidance on: Planning a Trip on the
Tasmanian Trail, Notes and Maps,
including insights and facilities for
each region along the way. Further
information, Relevant contacts and
Codes of Conduct for individual
user groups.

 
Urgent updates

Repulse Bailey Bridge (26.03.12)
Hydro Tasmania has informed the Association that the Repulse Bailey Bridge will be
closed from 10/4/2012 - 24/4/12.

FIRE WARNING - Meadowbank, Southern Tasmania (25.02.12)
Users of the Tasmanian Trail should be aware of a major bushfire in the Meadowbanks area in Southern Tasmania – it is presently out of control and use of the Trail in this area is not advisable. For further information please check with the relevant website - www.fire.tas.gov.au

Ponderosa Loop, Stoodley (6.06.11)
Windthrown radiata pine trees from the adjacent plantation and debris has made the route impassable.
A salvage operation is expected to clear the track to allow re-opening by late June 2011.

Blackwood Creek/Caves Track (24.01.11)
The Blackwood Creek/Caves Track link of the Tasmanian Trail is unpassable at the moment due to trees being down and the first bridge has been washed away. Alternate pathways should be followed until further notice.

Due to a change of the ownership of land it will be necessary to take the Malborough Main Road all the way to Bronte Park until such time as fresh negotiations are undertaken with the new owner.

2 113 26.7 Due to locked gates - a result of Trail users not respecting rules regarding security and locking of gates - please use the following alternative route:- Turn hard right into Bates Loop. Join Hopetoun Road after 3 kilometres and keep left. Continue down hill until the Main Road on the shore of Port Esperance is reached (3.4 kms). Turn Left into the centre of Dover (1km). Nov 11
3 77 9.7 The access for horses onto the bridge has been blocked and passage is not possible. Horse riders should ride from Ouse south along the highway for 6.8kms and turn right into Ellendale Road (C608) and continue for 6.5kms to Jones River Road before truning left. This junction is point .22.1 on page 80. Due to traffic along the highway riders should consider floating to the next campsite. This does not effect other user types. Nov 11

10 29 Before you start Accommodation is no longer available at the Bracknell Hotel. A small riverside reserve can be used for camping.
11 32 28.8 The gate and electric fence have been removed. Horses can be agisted on the flat area at the bottom of the rise.
12 36 1.35 Add after 1.35 - 2.2 (0.9) Turn left off forestry road into track.

14 39 19.5 Delete all description from and including 19.5 to 24.3 and add

22.2 (3.4) Road enters from the right. Veer left.

23.4 (1.2) Access to river. This area could be used as a camp site. As a result of these changes add 0.6 to all distances to the end of this section.
15 45 13.8 Replace “13.8 (0.5) Turn right.” with “15.0 (1.7) Turn left at the edge of the plantation. After 1.2km watch out for a lookout point on the right.

Delete “14.3 (0.5)”

Add “16.8 (1.8) Turn right (rustic settlement on the left).
16 45 15.3 Replace “15.3 (1.0) Pass a sawmill” with “16.1 (0.8) Locked gate. Turn right uphill along a fire break”

Replace “15.8 (0.5) gate and bridge.” with “16.4 (0.3) Turn left downhill (steep).”
17 45 16.0 Change “16.0 (0.20) Join a made up road.” to “16.9 (0.5) Turn right into a made up road.”

As a result of above changes add 1.1km to all distance to

18 46 25.2 There is now no accommodation at the Bracknell Hotel. Proceed a further 700m and turn left into a small riverside reserve just before the bridge. Toilets and a BBQ shelter are available here.

Delete 10.5 to 13.0 and add “12.4 (1.9) Turn right off main road into the bush.

Amendment

Due to the construction of forestry roads there has been some confusion along this section.
The route has been altered slightly near Bung Bung Creek and a detailed map has been provided to assist in navigating this section.

Insert before point 13.8
“13.2 (0.2) Cross forestry road.”

The trappers hut shown on the map may be mistaken for a pile of stones but once identified the base of the fireplace can be distinguished.

59     Parts of the Central Pleateau are used for deer shooting in season (March, May & June). The Trail is remote from most of the areas used but it would be advisable to wear bright clothing (safety orange) in bush land during the shooting season. Sept 07
60 99 33.9 A new campsite has been established on the recreation reserve on the northern side of the Huon River just before crossing the Judbury Bridge (see page 102 - point 0.4). The camp is behind the oval next to the cricket net. The local Council has placed some strict conditions on the use of the site.

All vehicles are restricted to the car park.
No vehicles are to be taken to the camp.

No horses are permitted on the oval. Access to the site for horses is along the road and down beside the far (western) fence.

Please observe the requirements of signs erected at the site.
