The Tasmanian Trail extends from Devonport to Dover. It passes over Crown land, State Forest, HEC land and private property. Landowners and managers, in a number of cases, require gates to be kept locked on their land. Bikeriders may opt not to obtain a key as they are able to negotiate gates easier than horseriders. However, if access is required to campsites by support vehicles a key may be required. Some toilet blocks have restricted access with Trail locks installed.

A key can be issued to a Trail user when a deposit of $100 has been paid to the outlet providing the key. When the key is returned to the outlet which provided it, the deposit will be returned by that outlet, less an administration fee of $20.

The administration fee is retained by the authorised outlet as their payment for participating in the system. The method of return of the key is a matter of agreement between the outlet and the Trail user and if a user is not intending to return to the outlet’s location the user should return the key by post. The outlet should provide its postal address at the time of issue. In these instances outlets would be expected to return the $80.00 to the user by mail.
